UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR BY DANCEWATER

06/05/17 DINNER WITH PROGRESSIVES
This Monday, June 5th, at 5:30 PM at Green Sage Cafe in Westgate in Asheville. We are gathering together this Monday evening at Green Sage cafe with fellow progressives because now more than ever we need to be together, learn together and work together. We ask that attendees purchase dinner, a beverage and/or dessert and RSVP so we can give our gracious friends at Green Sage a headcount. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us. Thank you. Anyone is invited to give an announcement or ask for signatures on a petition. Please give myself & Sam a quick email to let us know how much time you need. We have two speakers for Monday, Cecil Bothwell and Brownie Newman. Come to the Dinner with Progressives to listen to their updates for Asheville City and Buncombe County and  to ask questions about issues that you want to know more about. Cecil Bothwell is a  politician, writer, artist, musician and builder. Cecil was elected to the  Asheville City council in 2009, re-elected in 2013 and is running for office again in November 2017. Cecil says that he has always been an activist willing to show up, to speak out and to press for change. He has written and spoken out against environmental despoliation, injustice and senseless war. Brownie Newman grew up on a working farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains and graduated from Warren Wilson College.  Brownie is the new Buncombe County Commission Chair, elected November 2016. He was elected to the Asheville City Council in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. Brownie was elected to the Buncombe County Commission in 2012 to represent District 1. Brownie is also a partner and owner at Headwaters Solar, a solar energy company based in Asheville. During his time on Asheville City Council and on the County Commission, Brownie worked to protect our mountain environment, establish Asheville as a leader for clean energy, improve our public schools, and support equal rights for all citizens. 06/13/17 NAACP MONTHLY MEETING
Asheville-Buncombe NAACP Monthly Meeting. Join the local branch of NAACP for our regular monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm at Hill Street Baptist Church, 135 Hill Street in Asheville. Now through the General Election in November we will discuss the issues facing voters locally, in NC and the country. We educate and engage on these important issues. The U.S. Supreme Court denied a request from NC to allow provisions of its controversial voting rights law to go back into effect. In a 4-4 split, justices left undisturbed the July 29th opinion of the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals that the restrictions “target African Americans with almost surgical precision.” The three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals found that the law was adopted with “discriminatory intent” despite NC lawmakers’ claims that the ID provision and other changes were designed to prevent voter fraud. Please register to vote. You do not need an ID to vote!

We hope that by offering opportunities to learn more that we will create a forum for challenging conversations. The noted author James Baldwin observed, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” It is in that spirit of facing history and facing ourselves that we take to understanding the many ways that race informs our culture.  On Friday, June 16, at 1:30 PM, the Policing Minority Communities: Asheville Police Chief Tammy Hooper and Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan will discuss the ongoing efforts to build productive relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. Location is Reuter Center at UNCA. Contact Catherine Frank at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville at olliasheville.com or 828-251-6188 for more information.

06/16/17 DOCUMENTARY FILM IN ASHEVILLE
On Friday, June 16th, we are screening the important award-winning and Academy Award nominated documentary “13th” at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville. “Powerful, infuriating and at times overwhelming, Ava DuVernay’s documentary ‘13TH’ will get your blood boiling and tear ducts leaking. It shakes you up, but it also challenges your ideas about the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States, subject matter that could not sound less cinematic. Yet Ms. DuVernay — best known for “Selma,” and a filmmaker whose art has become increasingly inseparable from her activism — has made a movie that’s as timely as the latest Black Lives Matter protests and the recent presidential election.” - NYT. Representatives from Building Bridges will facilitate a discussion following the film. The film screening is at 7 PM, and is open to the public. Contact  Charlie Wussow at 612-860-6628 for more information. Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville is at One Edwin Place. There is no charge for viewing the film. Donations are welcome.

ACTIONS AND READINGS

FROM SIERRA CLUB:

Alert: contact Buncombe County Commissioners to support this year's budget for energy efficiency.  Attend & speak Tues, June 6 at 5 pm (200 College St, 3rd floor), or email the following 7 commissioners:
brownie.newman@buncombecounty.org, jasmine.beach-ferrara@buncombecounty.org, alfred.whitesides@buncombecounty.org, ellen.frost@buncombecounty.org, joe.belcher@buncombecounty.org, mike.fryar@buncombecounty.org, robert.pressley@buncombecounty.org

Talking points:
We strongly support full funding of the local clean energy proposals by the Energy Innovation Task Force including recommendations for low-income weatherization, helping improve energy efficiency for non-profit and other community organizations, and exploring broader use of renewable energy on public buildings, including schools. The 2017/18 budget to fully implement these recommendations is $560,000, with future yearly goals of $500,000.

It would be great to have some people speak at the beginning of the Buncombe County Commission meeting about the importance of prioritizing clean energy at the community level. Each person has up to 3 minutes to comment.

FROM SIERRA CLUB:

Alert: Contact Tim Moore, NC House Speaker, or your Representative if outside Buncombe County, to oppose "Billboard Protection Act." Vote will be in the next few days.

Talking Points to be against:
The bill would allow as many as 10 digital billboards per mile; would take away local governments authority to regulate billboards; would make NC taxpayers pay more money to billboard companies for removals and relocations; would allow more cutting of trees around billboards.

If you live outside of Buncombe County, please contact your state house representatives and ask them to oppose House Bill 581 as soon as possible because it will be voted on in the next few days, and let them know that you don’t want your city or area to look like Gatlinburg.  If you live in Buncombe County contact House Speaker Tim Moore and ask him not to support HB 581, 919-733-3451, Tim.Moore@ncleg.net.
